Polishing Mosaic Floors

All you need for this DIY project is easily available items often lying around the house and a floor-specific liquid polymer polish available commercially.

Picture this, you had an amazing handcrafted custom marble mosaic design installed on the floor of your interior or exterior a couple of years back but it has started losing its new marble feel and that squeaky clean shiny look marble floors are supposed to have. Sounds familiar?

No, your investment in mosaics wasn’t a waste of money. Nor do you have to worry about getting it redone or professionally restored.
This kind of dulling often happens to marble mosaic tile floors when they lose their original polish due to exposure to sun, water and other factors that wear it down over time. Additionally, it could be just deeply embedded dust, dirt and stains. Forget having to paying professionals to polish or refinish your mosaic. All you need to do is clean the surface thoroughly and apply some Zep Commercial High Traffic Polish (which is easily available at most of the hardware chains like Lowe’s as well as other hardware shops) over it and your floor will look as good as new. Here’s a step-by-step how-to guide that anyone can easily follow for a shiny marble floor:

Materials Required

  • Warm Water
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution)
  • Detergent (¼ cup)
  • Bucket
  • Vacuum Machine
  • Soft Mop
  • Soft pieces of cloth (for wiping and cleaning)
  • Paint roller
  • Paint roller tray
  • Zep Commercial High Traffic (or a commercially available alternate like HG Hagesan Golvpolish Satin Gloss Polish)

Instructions

  1. Remove all the easily removable dust from the surface of your floor by vacuuming it. In a bucket filled with warm water, add a quarter cup of detergent and mix it up well.
  2. Take a soft mop and dip into the bucket and mop the entire floor with this solution. Make sure to cover every inch, even the hard to reach edges and corners.
  3. Drain the original contents of the bucket and rinse it. Now, fill with a solution of one-half warm water and the other half 3% hydrogen peroxide.  Dip the mop into the solution and thoroughly clean the complete mosaic floor again.
  4. Scrub the floor with this hydrogen peroxide if needed. This solution will help with cleaning of the grout (the plain filler you see between the pieces of the mosaic tiles). Don’t be afraid to use this solution, on the contrary soak some extra on the floor and leave it for 30-40 minutes and then wipe the floor with a soft cloth.
  5. Now, take a paint roller pan and pour some polish liquid in it. Dip a new paint roller into the tray and cover it with the solution without saturating it too much. Apply this solution on the freshly cleaned mosaic tile floor by moving the roller over the whole area. Be sure to cover the surface evenly with the polish.
  6. Let the polish sit and soak into the marble tiles for 5 minutes, then wipe off the extra from the mosaic floor with a soft cloth.

Important Tips

  1. For a marble mosaic surface, use a special brush with synthetic bristles that don’t impose a scratching threat to your tiles. Scrub gently, not with too much pressure and in circular motions.
  2. Depending on the type of cleaner and polish you are using you might need some gloves and protective goggles. Always read the instructions carefully.
