Cleaning Glass Tiles

This piece contains useful tips on caring for glass tiles and steps to clean them. In short, we have everything you need to know about maintaining the beauty of glass tiles.

Picture this; you recently got a wonderful custom designed glass tile backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom or a gorgeous glass mosaic mural and accent detailing in one of the other rooms. You have probably given it a lot of your time, thought and resources to reach a level of perfection you wanted. So naturally, you’d want it to look this nice and never lose the original glory for many years. This goal is achievable no matter what a disgruntled glass tile mosaic owner tells you. All you need to do differently from those who end up with faded and cracked backsplashes and tiles is a proper maintenance.

Firstly, unlike other materials, glass tiles do not have a porous surface, which means that they won’t absorb dirt or water, making them naturally designed to last longer. Many glass tiles have flat surfaces, however some maybe textured.  While you’re cleaning the textured ones, you will have to clean out the grooves and crevices gently and remove the impurities and dust with special care. The usual gentle household cleaning supplies will work perfectly for the job. Here’s a list of supplies you might need followed by a step-by-step guide on the actual cleaning process:

Materials Required:

  • Soft-bristled brush or a soft rag
  • Commercial Glass Cleaner or DIY Cleaning Solution
  • Water (for the solution and rinsing)
  • Absorbent cloth or towel (for wiping off)

Instructions:

  1. Mix up some soap/detergent or vinegar with water and put the solution in a spray bottle and you got yourself a ready glass tile cleaning solution. You can use a specialized commercial cleaner as well.
  2. Lightly mist the cleaning liquid on the glass tiles. Let it stay for a couple of minutes before the next step.
  3. Take a soft brush or a cleaning cloth and scrub the deposited dirt  and scum out.
  4. Make sure you don’t miss the grout, scrub it down well.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, after you’re done cleaning and scrubbing.
  6. Wipe the tiles dry with a soft cloth or towel after rinsing so you don’t get those horrid water spots.

Important Tips:

  • Be careful with the glass and don’t use anything rough enough to leave scratches on the tile surface. Finding the right material (and force), that is coarse enough to get rid of the dirt residue but not too abrasive, is the key.
  • Exposure to moisture might make the grout color appear different, however, that’s just temporary and would go back to its original form as soon as it completely dries out.
